Saluting the torchbearers of wisdom on this TeachersDay
Remembering Dr. S. Radhakrishnan
The celebration of Teachers' Day in India commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a revered philosopher, statesman, and the second President of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan was not just a brilliant mind but also a passionate advocate for education. When some of his students and friends requested to celebrate his birthday, he humbly suggested that instead of observing his birthday separately, it would be his proud privilege if September 5th was observed as Teachers' Day. This gesture beautifully encapsulates the selfless spirit of teaching.
Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that “true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves.” His life and vision highlight the importance of holistic education, where a teacher doesn’t just provide information but also encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion in students.
The Indispensable Role of a Good Teacher
Imagine a world without teachers. It’s almost unthinkable, isn’t it? From the moment we utter our first words, to mastering complex equations and understanding the nuances of history, teachers are the constant threads weaving through the tapestry of our learning journey.
A good teacher is far more than just a purveyor of facts. They are:
- Mentors: Guiding us through challenges, offering advice, and helping us navigate difficult decisions.
- Inspirers: Igniting curiosity, fostering a love for learning, and encouraging us to dream big.
- Role Models: Demonstrating integrity, perseverance, and kindness through their actions.
- Cheerleaders: Believing in our potential, celebrating our successes, and helping us learn from our failures.
- Second Parents: Often spending more waking hours with us during our formative years than anyone else, they offer comfort, discipline, and understanding.
Teachers: Our Earthly Gods?
In many cultures, teachers are held in such high esteem that they are often compared to gods. The ancient Sanskrit shloka "Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha" perfectly illustrates this reverence. It translates to, "Guru is Brahma (the creator), Guru is Vishnu (the preserver), Guru is Devo Maheswara (the destroyer), Guru is verily the supreme absolute, so salutations to that divine Guru."
This isn't about worshipping them literally, but acknowledging the immense power they wield – the power to create, preserve, and transform lives. Like divine beings, they dispel the darkness of ignorance and lead us towards the light of knowledge and wisdom.
The First Teacher: Our Mother
Before we even step into a classroom, our first and most influential teacher is undoubtedly our mother. From teaching us to walk, talk, and distinguish right from wrong, to instilling values and nurturing our emotional intelligence, a mother lays the very foundation of our learning. Her lessons are often lifelong and deeply ingrained in our personalities.
On this Teachers' Day, let us take a moment to express our gratitude to all the teachers who have touched our lives – from our mothers and fathers who taught us life's first lessons, to the dedicated educators in schools and colleges, and even those who teach us through their wisdom and experience every single day.
Their dedication, patience, and unwavering belief in us are the true treasures that enrich our society. Happy Teachers' Day to all the guiding stars!
